Clackamas High School junior Jen Reese, the two-time Three Rivers League “Player of the Year,” is fast gaining a reputation as one of the top female high school basketball players in the nation.
Reese got a tremendous honor last week, when she was named the 2009-10 Gatorade Oregon Girls Basketball Player of the Year.
“She’s the first one in the history of Clackamas High School,” said Clackamas athletic director Jeff Erdman. “We are very proud of her. This is a very prestigious award.”
“I think Jen Reese is more than deserving,” said Clackamas coach Ken Trapp. “The stats alone show what kind of season she had. I think she had a double-double in every game in league. She was double- and triple-teamed in every game, yet she was as consistent as last year.
“The way she held her composure with the amount of banging she took is a tribute to her sportsmanship and competitiveness.”
“[The Gatorade Player of the Year honor] means a lot,” said Reese. “I didn’t think I was going to get it. I’m speechless. It’s still sinking in.”
“Jen Reese is unbelievably good in the low post and is good out to 3-point range,” said Michael Abraham, Reese’s coach with Team Concept AAU. “She’s not the quickest kid, but she maximizes her footwork and movement. She doesn’t jump super high, but she seems to have great timing for the ball, so she blocks tons of shots and gets tons of rebounds.”
A 6-2 post, Reese had a phenomenal junior year at Clackamas, leading the Cavaliers to a 21-3 record, averaging 21 points, 12.3 rebounds, 2 blocked shots, 2 steals, 1.6 assists, and only 2 turnovers a game.
She made 57 percent (187-of-328) of her shots from the floor and 79 percent (129-of-164) of her attempted free throws. She had a double-double in 18 of Clackamas’ 24 games this season.
Reese took the state by storm her sophomore year, averaging 17 points – on 60 percent shooting, and 10 rebounds. She earned first-team all-state and first-team all-state tournament honors as a sophomore.
Reese starred at the 2009 Class 6A State Tournament, scoring 47 points in two games, while hitting 20-of-24 shots from the floor.
