La Salle Prep’s 11th-ranked girls basketball team appears to be putting it together at the right time.
Competing in arguably the most competitive Class 4A league in the state, the 11th-ranked Falcons last week moved into third place in the Capital Conference standings with wins over Stayton (50-45) and over seventh-ranked Gladstone (49-44).
The pair of victories left the Falcons (15-8, 7-4) third in the Capital Conference standings with one regular-season game remaining. The Falcons were to meet Estacada (8-12, 3-8) on Tuesday (Feb. 23) in their regular season final. The conference’s top teams, third-ranked Cascade (20-2, 10-1) and fifth-ranked Molalla (14-6, 8-3), were to go head-to-head on Tuesday in their regular-season final.
Megan Hays played a pivotal role in the Falcons’ 49-44 win at Gladstone on Tuesday. The 6-0 junior ruled the inside, knocking down a game-high 18 points and corralling 15 rebounds.
Rebounding and half-court defense were the keys to the Falcons victory, as the Gladiators struggled on offense and got very few seconds shots.
The Falcons took charge of the game early, building a 17-8 advantage in the first quarter. Gladstone later closed the gap to two points, but the Falcons put the game away with clutch free throw shooting down the stretch.
Senior wing Laura Atherton (10 points) joined Hays in double figures in scoring. Junior forward Elle D’Amore sparked the offense with five assists.
Atherton played a major role, as she rallied the troops in a 50-45 La Salle Prep girls basketball win over Stayton on Feb. 16.
