The 5th District includes most of Clackamas County, parts of Southwest Portland, all of Marion, Polk, Tillamook and Lincoln counties and part of Benton County.
Since six-term incumbent Darlene Hooley, D-West Linn, announced in February that she wouldn’t seek a seventh term, the race has rocketed to one of the nation’s hottest House races.
It’s rated by the Rothenberg Political Report as one of only 15 “tossup” races in the nation among 435 House races, and one of the few Democrat-held seats that Republicans might win.
State Sen. Kurt Schrader, D-Canby and Steve Marks, a longtime aide to former Gov. John Kitzhaber, are the leading Democrats in the race.
Mannix is better known in the district than Erickson, but Erickson may have an edge in a short race because of his deep pockets. He spent about $1.5 million of his own money in his losing race against Hooley in 2006, and has already loaned his campaign nearly $600,000 for this election.
Mannix reported raising less than $200,000 by April 30, while Erickson had raised more than $900,000, much of it from a personal loan.
Oetken said in the Tribune interview that she and her friend were outraged by Erickson’s “pro-life” claims when her friend, a Republican, received his flyer in 2006. The flyer was mailed to people on Oregon Right to Life’s mailing list, because the group had endorsed Erickson, Anderson said.
“That’s the point when I was so upset, when I saw a beautiful little baby on it, saying Mike Erickson was protecting babies,” the woman said Monday. “I think it’s completely hypocritical that he would solicit or ask for an endorsement from Right to Life,” she said.
Erickson’s current website also boasts his “pro-life” stance. Right to Life has a long and close relationship with Mannix and endorsed him rather than Erickson in the 2008 race. The group publicly complained about Erickson mentioning his earlier endorsement from the group in a campaign mailer sent this spring.
Oetken and her friend notified Right to Life of their concerns during the 2006 race, and sent an e-mail to several news outlets.
They set up at least one interview with a newspaper reporter, but canceled at the last minute. The woman feared getting her name “smeared,” Oetken said.
Oetken said she met Erickson with her friend at Portland’s Jimmy Mak’s jazz club. She said the two dated for several months, and even went to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, together about a month after the abortion.
Right to Life’s Anderson said that after talking with Erickson, there appeared some possible discrepancies in the woman’s story. “She had another relationship at the time that was on and off,” Anderson said. “She did acknowledge that.”
There was also a question whether Erickson knew he was driving the woman to an abortion clinic, and paying for a different medical treatment, Anderson said.
“It was a very explosive situation,” she said. “I had this girl who was very much in trauma and needed help. I had no reason to believe (Erickson) did not have a pro-life political position.”
The woman said Monday there was no confusion about who was the father at the time. “There was a huge issue with an ex-boyfriend who was living in my apartment at the time. That created a mess,” she said.
“It was absolutely Mike Erickson’s child and he knew that, and he knew that I was going to have an abortion,” she said. “He knew that’s what his money was paying for.”
In the end, Right to Life decided that it didn’t have solid enough evidence to pull its endorsement of Erickson, Anderson said. “I don’t have any reason to doubt her,” she said. “I think the fuzziness is because of the trauma.
“The issue was, did what we knew rise to the standard that we would need to make such a weighty decision,” she said. “The withdrawal of the endorsement would require an explanation, and how do you do that without revealing information that would be harmful to the woman?”

I'm sorry but this woman has little to no credibility until she tells us her name. These are accusations from a nameless person in a last-minute attempt to sway voters to Mannix.
It's impossible to believe that Mannix just found out about this and sent a mailer on it because he was so concerned. The more plausible explanation is that they have known for some time about this and chose to wait until the last minute so that Erickson would have no time to respond in the mail and instead have to try and defend himself in the news or not at all.
Thanks Kevin, you just made up my mind for me as to who will NOT be representing me because of their campaigning tactics and pattern of lying and deception.

Unfortunately, Mike Erickson is the slimy, deceptive, lying one, not Kevin Mannix.
I know someone who's currently dating Mike Erickson, and not only is he almost 20 years her senior, she has evidence of some infidelities on his behalf. It's too bad she still chooses to be involved with him, but luckily, you can still choose who gets your vote.
It doesn't have to be this guy. And it SHOULDN'T be this guy. Mike Erickson is gross and a fraud.

Why is it always that hyper-Christian *pro-life* Republicans always turn out to be drug-addicts, adulterers, child-molesters, cross-dressers, closeted gays, cannabals or serial killers? I mean, the GOP is supposed to be the party of family values ... right?

“She had another relationship at the time that was on and off,” from the ORTL political director who interviewed the victim.
and then from the victim:
“There was a huge issue with an ex-boyfriend who was living in my apartment at the time. That created a mess,” she said.
“It was absolutely Mike Erickson’s child and he knew that, and he knew that I was going to have an abortion,” she said. “He knew that’s what his money was paying for.”
--------
Okay. Girl meets boy. Has sex. Maybe was still in a 'on and off again' with her ex boyfriend, who still lived in her apartment ("that created a mess").
Yes, what a mess.
Notice her answer to a question that was not published, but you KNOW what the question was: "It was absolutely Mike Erickson’s child and he knew that..."
Somebody asked her point blank: "Was Mike the father?", maybe because the other question asked but not printed was "Did you have sex with your ex-boyfriend around the same time?" And also, HOW do you know exactly who the father was? Was DNA tested?
Could it be that Mike got involved with a girl who was going out with two guys "on and off again", him and her ex-boyfriend that she was still living with? And she got pregnant, and wanted an abortion, and he paid, even if he didn't know he was the father? And would she lie and say "it's your child to both of them" to get both to pay for her abortion?
What a mess she was involved with.
And the worst thing she sees is that Mike is a hypocrite.
Buy a mirror, lady, and take a good long look into it!

Erickson has been using deceptive tactics against Kevin since day one.
Erickson is self funding his campaign and has NO MAJOR ENDORSEMENTS- whereas Kevin has many major ones. Erickson has spent $1 million of his own money thus far - trying to buy his way in to politics. Erickson does not have the people's support, nor does he deserve it.
He refuses to debate Kevin Mannix on any issue and hopes he can blind the public with tv ads until they vote.
Erickson has no political experience and is merely a rich bachelor.
Oh yea, and he drops off women at abortion clinics with the line 'i call ya sometime'
GO KEVIN!!

It's her body, she obviously wanted the abortion (especially sleeping with two guys). He can't force her to have one. Even if this is true, which I don't think it is (it's too late, too desperate and too pathetic to believe) then oh well. He can still be pro-life. I dated a guy who was pro-life, we got prego in college and I had an abortion. Not his choice. This makes me want to vote for Mike even more. So what if he's flawed a bit? At least he's not trying last minute hurtful schemes to get ahead in a desperate hour.

Unbelievable.
Family values?? Which scenario tell us more about Erickson's family values?
a. After knowingly endorsing the politics of Right-to-Life, he gets a girl pregnant, gives her money for an abortion, and drives her himself to the clinic. THEN he still keeps on seeing her. Only NOW, he denies everything.
b. After knowingly endorsing the politics of Right-to-Life, he shacks up with some girl who also has a live-in boyfriend still on the scene. SOMEBODY gets her pregnant, he gives her money for an abortion, and drives her himself to the clinic. THEN he still keeps seeing her. Only NOW he denies everything.
What about Right-to-Life? The reporter makes it sound like the girls' stories were corroborated, except that it appeared that despite everything, Erickson still had a "Right-to-Life political position".
The fact that any of these people still have a career in politics speaks volumes about the depth of the hypocrisy in today's GOP.

I don't know Mike personally, but I can say a few things things based on seeing him around town and talking with people who do know him:
1) He's a successful businessman, good at what he does and he's made a lot of money. God bless him.
2) He IS sort of a "ladies man", and being a bachelor with money, he does have his way with the chicks. From outside observation, it looks like he's trying to be Hugh Hefner, Lake O version.
Guys with money and power (and waterfront homes!) can get their fair share of women, and that's just the way it is. Being like many men in that position, he likely has made LOTS of bad decisions all in the name of fun. This crosses all political borders, and is not just because he is a Republican.
We will never know the real story, because the gal in question doesn't seem like she makes the best decisions in her life, and probably leads a bit of a dysfunctional lifestyle, or at least she did THEN.
He did a dumb thing...hello, condoms, Mike! Don't trust women to take care of everything, because they don't. Especially someone living a messed up lifestyle. And, if she didn't want another baby, and he didn't want to be a Father, that is their business. The world does NOT need another unwanted kid in a single Mom household, if we can be honest here. It's not fair to the kid. It should have never gotten to that point, but if it did, so be it.
But, Mike should shut up about his Pro-Life stance. In fact, I wish the Republican party would shut up about abortion in general. It's a personal issue, not a politcal issue.

Not surprising at all. Just another sleaze-ball politician like mannix himself. Both of these guys have ethics a few notches below child molestors. Mannix has been lurking around trying to scrounge up any public support he can get towards his end dream of being in a position to where he no longer has to work for a living and can impose his tyranical authoritarian notions on decent citizens. We found out what a sleaze Erickson was in his race against Hooley, and now he has reconfirmed himself as another piece of crap politician again. Just don't be lulled into thinking that Mannix is any less of a piece of -hit. Do some research on this bum and see how long he's been skulking around the periphery of politics trying to pick up some crumbs.
Meassure 11 might have had some good intentions aimed towards better public safety, but it has been an absolute disaster and failure at acomplishing it's promise. It's main accomplishment has been redistributing wealth to the prison industry complex, and bringing inflexibility to a juditial system that at times does show prudence and good judgment.
Oh, it has also made mean spirited right wing christian fanatics feel good about punishment.
It's a low down, cotton picken, dirty shame that these are the choices we end up with. In a perfect world we could put both of these candidates and their families on the next stage leaving town and get them as far out of Oregon as possible.

Livin La VidasSuburbia";
Brilliant. Simply brilliant. You put some very basic points about human nature in perspective. I don't care either if Mike is a rich successful business man, or likes his jelly roll. His mistake was jumping on the pro-life band wagon to align himself with the stupid people that consider this a valid political issue. One of those stupid people is Mannix. I'm afraid it's alover but the cryin for Erickson now. He done crapped in his mess-kit. No one likes a blatant hypocrite.
And oh how right you are about not leaving it up to the woman to worry about birth control. As you say, at least we don't have another unwanted child, and some poor SOB isn't having to make payments to the court for twenty years or answer to parasite bureaucrats living large in Oregon City on our tax money.

Wow, Mike tell ya this is such a tough hole that you are in. I hadn't heard this gossip through the grapevine until now.
I have to say that I really feel bad for men when it comes to unexpected pregnancy. Most men ask about whether a woman is on birth control and the woman gives and answer. If the answer is "NO" 99% of the men will not continue their advances. I am certain that Mike E. asked that very question. Considering that they dated for "several months", I would say that he "expected" that she was consistently on birth control. Unfortunately birth control fails .01% of the time and sometimes women make mistakes and don't take the birth control as "directed".
Sometimes women play "Emotional Rollette" to see if a pregnancy will pull her man to her in a full time commitment and sometimes it's really just about money.
It is very unfortunate that there are a lot of women who take birth control religiously and get pregnant regardless, and then there are women who lie to manipulate a man right into a position they planned. I have seen married women do this to thier husbands many times especially when the man wants a divorce!
Conception should not be used as a pawn in a failing relationship. Children are not bandages for failing relationships or for bartering. Conception should be controlled by both sexual partners and fortunately male birth control pill is already a reality in America in states such as Washington and Tennessee. Men have been on it for 6 years now successfully.
If you want to be Pro-Life then support funding for Drug C-31 the Male Birth Control Pill! Then men will be able to control "WHO" can bare their offspring and WHEN".
Mike if you took the same woman on vacation afterwards you obviously cared about her. You should have taken her out of state and went in with her. Don't you think that she was MORE embarrassed than you about having to go into a clinic and go through the controversial event by herself? I know you were probably trying to disassociate yourself with this event back then but, she was more humiliated by the entire event than you could ever immagine.
8 years is a long time ago and you were only 35 years old then but, still a grown experienced adult. I feel bad for both of you that the situation had happened. I truly hope that after all of this bashing that you were actually the father of the embryo.
It's too bad.
Nobody actually wants an abortion - have some empathy people! Yes, you guys are right that honesty should precede a request for Pro-Life funding.

"...getting some"? WHAT????
Government folks are people with the ability to change laws and the direction of America, we expect people who want those political positions to have a history of following the same laws that are imposed on us citizens.
The voters want officials to be honest and able to make intelligent, mature decisions which are not harmful to themselves or others.
Voters don't want a candidate or a political official that feels that laws are for "other people".
The abortion issue would have been better handled if he just stated that it was a "tragic event that he didn't have verifiable information that proved initially that he was the biological father and didn't feel confident in the direction of the relationship with this particular woman."
So "getting some" isn't really the point the voters are making here. If you read through the messages you will hopefully comprehend that they are concerned about his personality and the way Mike E. leads his lifestyle that is not condusive to paragraphs 1, 2, and 3.
Running for office will without a doubt aire the skeletons in ones closet.

God, this poor girl... She really did quite a brave thing standing up. And c'mon guys, shouldn't birth control be a 50/50???
I see quotes for Lois Anderson from Right for Life, but no one mentioned this one...
"Lois Anderson, Oregon Right to Life political director, confirmed in an interview earlier this month that she talked to the woman at length in 2006 and was convinced she was credible. “In her mind, he knew she was pregnant and she told him it was his child,” Anderson said.
Leaders of the group spoke with Erickson about the allegations in 2006, and he admitted taking the woman to a medical appointment and paying for it, she said."
What, does he think we are stupid? What other kind of medical procedure would she have had for $300?
Were you also aware that the right for life folks also made the following statement...
"Oregon Right to Life has a long and close relationship with Mannix and endorsed him rather than Erickson in the 2008 race. The group wouldn’t have endorsed Erickson in the 2008 race anyway, said Executive Director Gayle Atteberry, but he never asked for it."
This woman is a heroic victim here. Let's use our brains here and make educated choices on who we vote for. Take a look at his credibility... when has Erickson been truthful?? How credible is he? And then we can play the game of "where in the world is Mike Erickson..." His only direct statement was one calling this a Mannix smear campaign and attacking his voting record. If this were untrue shouldn't he be vehemently denying this???

Helloooooo....pregnant women are not victims of anything. Do the math!
No birth control + SEX = babies.
Women + Pregnancy = Emotional & Financial Manipulation
Men + Money + Nice Homes + Women = Desparate attempts to aquire the Good Life through deception
Old Men + Trophy Girl Friend = Financial Lure + Deception

Men are more victims than women! When we try to tell women that we are not interested they pull out all of the stops to keep us. They talk to our friends and family to dig for information, show up and seduce us with short skirts, high heels, low tops and try for one last time. When we move forward on thier attempts we are called dogs. If women stop thier birth control without telling us and end up pregnant and come crying to us for suggestions, they think we are jerks when we are honest that we don't want to have a baby with THEM!
Women have the role of victim down to perfection. We have to sit back with this liar growing our child in thier belly and we are stuck for 18 years with the woman! Payments, guilt trips, visitations! Why doesn't my life count? How come nobody thinks I'm a victim of fraud? Because I am a MAN??? I am supposed to think because I didn't use a condom that it's completely my fault and responsibility to make the situation right! Why am I stuck with marrying a liar or paying high child support payments to a woman I was trying to get away from in the first place. Why do people flock to her and say she is a VICTIM???? PLEAAAASSSE!!!!!!!!
Don't call liars victims! Give us men more choices in birth control and we will use em!

Wow... a little bitterness, huh? Might I point out that this woman did not have his child!!! Isn't the point of this story abortion?? The real story here is not that she got pregnant, as both of them played a role in this; nor is it that she had an abortion. The real controversy here seems to be that after Erickson paid for his unborn child to be aborted, he then went to the Right for Life for an endorsement. Am I the only one that sees the hypocrisy here? Isn't that why we are all discussing this??

So Erickson's defense is, yeah I may have farked her on and off for a month or two. I don't really remember her, or her last name, or where she lived, or that she told me she was pregnant. But I farked a lot of women over the last 7 or 8 years, and they all kind of look alike after a while. And lots of them ask me for money when I drop them off afterwards. And we don't always exchange Christmas Cards forever and ever.
That's not illegal, right? I can still haz U.S. Congressmen Job, yes? Kevin voted for tax increases, remember? I don't vote for tax increases.

You can’t fix this REPUBLICAN MESS with more Republicans!
Bush/McCain-style Republicans:
... Have done NEARLY NOTHING ABOUT ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION.
... Don’t care a bit about how the economy affects the average person.
... Totally messed up BOTH wars but want to keep spending BILLIONS of tax dollars in the Middle East.
... Preached to us about their “FAMILY VALUES” but have had scandal after scandal after scandal, often involving little boys, airport bathrooms or abusing their power for financial gain.

McCain’s position on abortion has changed over and over and over.
McCain is AGAINST THE GI BILL that would help returning troops!!!
He’s just like Bush on economic policies says 100 more years in Iraq is “fine with me”.
If you’re a true conservative (FAR RIGHT), you might want an alternative:
* Chuck Baldwin (Constitution Party) - www.constitutionparty.com/
* Bob Barr (Libertarian) - www.bobbarr2008.com/
* Ron Paul (Independent) - www.ronpaul2008.com/
Anybody but McCain/McBush!

It seems kind of simple.
If Erickson has led the lifestyle as alledged, there are other "connections" he has made who would verify or contradict what has been reported. His behavior is not exactly new, unique or hard to understand. Once engaged, the lower brain can be quite determinded.
The anger from some of the male writers? Lest we all forget what we got taught in 6th grade, sex leads to babies. That's why it's there. The rest is just harsh reality if we connect casually. Money? Entrapment? Marriage? Good gosh, what about kids? Oh yeah. Put a sock on it, and avoid the hassles.
I am silenced by agreeing with Kevin Mannix for maybe the first time ever. As if his values for society inspire me. Not.

that's pretty funny how after she got the abortion they went on a vacation together. some one sounds a little butt hurt that they didn't end up rich with mike erickson in the long run. is this woman trailor trash just looking for some reperations? mike erickson is a pretty good man i've met him and i don't see this happening at all. she just doesn't seem to have all of her facts, just a good friend putting together some peices. this whole story is a bunch of garbage and of course mannix is going to post the story are you kidding me? that's the kind of guy he is...

Mike Erickson' is close to the rich LO party crowd and they continue to party hard. Just look at who is at his parties and the girls that show with their new boob jobs and sex happy style. Is this the guy we want in congress? Birds of a feather flock together. Why is the media ignoring all the girls who know what this guy is like. Did any show up at Starbucks and talk to them? Portland Tribune needs to do more follow up. Maybe some of his supporters should come clean.
Mannix has my vote or the Democratic primary winner. Never this guy who clearly runs with the rich party central crowd.

Re: Woman says Erickson paid for abortion
Many single mothers in our society get pregnant by rich men in order to extort money from the stud and/or society. At least she is telling the truth. Most single mothers are liars.
