De Ann Troen’s “Summertime Souvenir” is the winner of the 2010 Portland Rose Festival Name the Rose contest.
The Happy Valley resident’s suggested theme was chosen this week from 780 entries submitted in Oregon and Washington. The new name was announced Tuesday, Jan. 26.
“I was bouncing off the walls when they called me,” Troen said. “I feel so honored my name was picked. I used to enter the festival’s Name the Theme Contest and always thought ‘Summertime Souvenir’ would make a great festival theme.”
Troen is a full-time Mary Kay Team Leader and Charter Member of the One More Time Around Again Marching Band. She has been collecting Rose Festival Pins for 28 years and marched in 25 Starlight Parades, 28 Grand Floral Parades and one Tournament of Roses Parade.
The “Summertime Souvenir” rose has big pointed buds that swirl open to show off shades of peach, coral and salmon. Disease resistant, with medium-large flowers, the rose has a mild fruity fragrance.
Troen’s prize package, valued at $350, includes a “Season Pass” to all 2010 Rose Festival events and a “Rose Care Package” from Dennis’ 7 Dees. Potted and bare root bushes will be available exclusively at Dennis’ 7 Dees Garden Centers in mid-February. For each rose sold, $2 will be donated to the Portland Rose Festival Foundation.
