A Milwaukie woman showed she was mighty handy with butter, when she won Best in Show for her recipe for the holiday spice log in the Northwest Dairy Farmers Butter Up the Holidays contest.
Elizabeth Hatch competed against 165 entrants from across the Northwest and received her award at a recipe judging event in January at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts. She also won first place in the appetizer category with the spice log.
Hatch said she had never entered a recipe contest before hearing about the competition on “Good Day Oregon.”
“I was home that day and had time to pull up the Web site to enter. It was actually the first time I had ever written down the recipe. I think I have been making it for four or five years,” she said.
“When I first received a phone call about being a finalist in the Butter Up the Holidays recipe contest, I had to ask if she would send the recipe back to me because I wanted to see if it was really accurate after writing it down. I never thought I would win!
“I don’t even know why or how I first made it. I always create and make it in the moment, either because I have a craving, or a need for a dessert, appetizer or a meal; or I have to make do with what I have on hand. I love to cook, eat and feed other people as well. I love a house full of friends and family and plenty of food to serve,” she said.
Hatch, who has been a self-employed painting contractor for 15 years, won a $150 gift card to Fred Meyer for placing first in the appetizer category and then was given $500 toward a new appliance, upon being named Best in Show.
She added that she named her creation the holiday spice log for the contest, and “now it will be my award-winning holiday spice log.”
